Cut Out of the Ground — illustration for the Akvan chapter of the Ages of Myth Codex

Akvan · Chapter 2 of 5

Cut Out of the Ground

Two vanishings · A spring · The ground taken with him

He would not touch the man. He took the field he was lying on.

Twice Rostam tries to take the creature and twice it vanishes — once from the lasso, once from the arrow — and the Shahnameh has him conclude that this needs cunning rather than strength, and that it can be nobody but Akvan. Then, after three days and nights, he sleeps by a spring with his bow-frame for a pillow and the lasso still on his arm, wearing the armour he is famous for. Akvan sees him from a distance, turns himself into a wind, and cuts the earth away all round him, lifting the whole piece of ground into the sky with the man asleep on it.
