Anubis · Chapter 2 of 6
Lord of the Sacred Land
The first lord · A cult displaced · What remained
He held the office first. The title moved on without him.
In the oldest Egyptian sources Anubis is the principal figure of the dead, not an assistant to anyone. The Pyramid Texts address him as the one who counts hearts and receives the king. Then, across centuries, the cult of Osiris rises, and the texts begin handing the throne of the underworld to Osiris while Anubis keeps the work — the wrapping, the tomb, the scales. It is one of the clearest cases in Egyptian religion of a role being reassigned over a thousand years, and of a figure surviving the loss by making himself indispensable.
