Whose Son He Is

Ask who fathered him and the answer depends on the century.
Egyptian sources do not agree on where Anubis came from, and the disagreement is the interesting part. Older material links him to Ra. The Coffin Texts make him a son of Nephthys. Plutarch, writing in Greek roughly two thousand years after the earliest of this, tells a story in which Nephthys bore him to Osiris and Isis raised the child as her own. Later Egyptian tradition sometimes calls him a son of Osiris outright. Three thousand years of religion produced several answers and kept all of them.
