baldr · Chapter 1 of 4
The Oaths
A dream · Oaths from everything · A game in the assembly
They made a sport of his safety. That is how thorough the proof felt.
In the Eddas, Baldr dreams of his own death, and the gods take the dream seriously. Frigg takes an oath from everything that might harm him — fire and water, iron and every metal, stones, earth, trees, sicknesses, beasts, birds, poison, serpents. All of them swear. So the gods invent a game out of it: they stand Baldr up in the assembly and throw things at him, shoot at him, strike at him, and nothing touches him. Snorri's phrasing is that this seemed a great honour to them all. It is one of the few genuinely happy scenes in Norse myth, and it is a scene about a loophole nobody has found yet.
