baldr · Chapter 3 of 4
Hringhorni
A ship that would not move · A wife who did not survive it · A whisper
The most powerful being in the world had one thing left to say, and said it privately.
In Snorri's telling, they mean to burn him on his own ship, the greatest of all ships, and they cannot move it. A giantess is sent for, arrives riding a wolf bridled with vipers, and shoves it out with one push so hard the rollers catch fire and the whole land shakes. Thor, for reasons Snorri does not give, is enraged and has to be talked out of killing her. Baldr's wife Nanna sees the body carried aboard and dies of grief on the spot, so she burns with him. A dwarf gets under Thor's feet and is kicked into the flames for it. Vafþrúðnismál adds a detail Snorri lacks: before the pyre is lit, Odin whispers something into his dead son's ear that nobody has ever recorded.
- A burning launch
- A wife who followed
