Esfandiyar · Chapter 1 of 8

Proof Against Weapons

A crown prince · A champion of the faith · A fact with no origin

The poem never tells you how he became unwoundable. It just stops mentioning wounds.

The Shahnameh presents him as the crown prince of Iran and the armed champion of the religion his father has just adopted, and it presents his body as a settled fact. Men call him the brazen-bodied one; weapons do not mark him. What the poem never does is explain it. There is no scene in which the gift is conferred, no bath, no ritual, no moment where an exception is left open — the epithet simply turns up in people's mouths and the verse proceeds. The account of how it was granted exists, but in other and later books, and the one weakness everybody knows about does not appear in those books at all.
