Faramarz · Chapter 1 of 5
Rostam's Other Son
A father named · A war led · A mother the poem omits
The poem knew whose son he was and not who bore him.
The Shahnameh does not say who his mother was. It says he is Rostam's son, and then puts him to work: his substantial exploit in Ferdowsi's poem is the long war of vengeance for the murdered prince Siyavash, in which he leads the army, kills a king in the field, and takes a son of Afrasiab prisoner. That is the shape of him here — a competent commander in his father's shadow, without a legend of his own. Other traditions supply the missing mother in at least five incompatible ways, which is usually a sign that the original simply left the space blank.
- A war led
- A father's name
- A blank space
