Thrown Into The Sea

Three children · One ocean · A solution that grew

They put him somewhere he could not be a problem. He filled it.

Snorri's account in Gylfaginning reads like a set of decisions minuted. Loki has three children by the giantess Angrboða — a wolf, a serpent and a daughter — and the gods, knowing what is prophesied of them, act early. Hel is sent down to the mists. Fenrir is kept close and eventually bound. The serpent gets the simplest disposal of the three: Odin throws him into the deep sea that lies around all lands. It should have been the end of the matter. Instead he grows there, in the place he was put, until he lies around the whole world and bites his own tail: the Midgard Serpent, coiled around the world of men.
