The Eye at the Well — illustration for the Odin chapter of the Ages of Myth Codex

Odin · Chapter 2 of 8

The Eye at the Well

Mímir · A pledge · Wisdom bought

The price was an eye. The strange part is that it was a fair price.

Under one root of the world-tree, the sources place a well, and beside it Mímir, who drinks from it and is wise because he does. Odin came to ask for a draught. The Prose Edda says he did not get it until he had left an eye behind as the pledge, and Völuspá returns to the detail from the other side: Mímir drinks his mead each morning out of the Father of the Slain's wager. The bargain is not described as painful or heroic. It is described as a transaction, and it went through.
