Odin · Chapter 8 of 8
What He Whispered
A contest · A last question · A withheld answer
He did not out-know him. He out-asked him.
The Eddic poem Vafþrúðnismál is a wisdom contest with a wager on it, and the rule in such a contest is that you may not ask what you cannot answer. Odin, disguised, works through cosmology and prophecy and then leans in with a last question: what did Odin say in his son's ear before Baldr was laid on the pyre? The giant stops. Only one person could ask that, he says, and names him. Nobody wins on knowledge. He wins by asking the one thing he alone owns — and the poem never tells us the answer.
