Equal To Herself — illustration for the ouranos chapter of the Ages of Myth Codex

ouranos · Chapter 1 of 3

Equal To Herself

Made by Earth · Equal to her · Nowhere to put a child

He was built to cover everything. Nobody asked what that would do to what was underneath.

Hesiod's Theogony is blunt about the order of events. Gaia, the Earth, bore starry Ouranos equal to herself, to cover her on every side and to be a firm seat for the blessed gods forever. He is made by her, for a purpose, and the purpose is coverage. Then they have children — the Titans, the Cyclopes, the Hundred-Handed — and here the arrangement fails, because he will not let them out. Hesiod says he hid each one away in a hollow of Earth as soon as it was born, and took pleasure in the wickedness. The sky pressing down has nowhere to put anything.
