Quetzalcoatl · Chapter 2 of 7
The Bones of the Ancestors
A descent · Broken bones · Blood on the pieces
He stole the dead to make the living, and dropped them on the way up.
One post-conquest Nahuatl source tells how people were made after the last world ended. Quetzalcoatl goes down to Mictlan for the bones of the previous humanity, and the lord of the dead sets conditions and then breaks them. The bones are dropped and shattered, which the tale offers as the reason people come in different sizes, and Quetzalcoatl carries the pieces out, grinds them, and lets his own blood fall on them. The text is the Leyenda de los Soles, written in Nahuatl in 1558, a generation after the conquest — the earliest written form of a story that is certainly older than it.
