Set · Chapter 1 of 6

The Red Lord

Desert · Storm · Necessary disorder

The opposite of order here was not evil. It was the desert.

Egyptian tradition placed Set over the desert, the storm and the foreign edge of the world — everything outside the cultivated strip along the river. He was associated with red, the colour of the sand and of things that did not belong to the black soil. It is tempting to read that as villainy, and later Egyptians did, but for most of Egyptian history the sources treat his violence as a resource. Somebody had to be strong in the way the desert is strong. Kings were compared to him as a compliment.
