Set · Chapter 5 of 6
The God They Erased
Rehabilitation · Demonisation · A reputation over time
It took Egypt two thousand years to decide he was the villain.
Egyptian tradition did not always treat Set as an enemy, and following that change is the most interesting thing about him. He held an old cult in Upper Egypt, was claimed as a patron by the Ramesside kings, and shared temple space with figures he had supposedly wronged. Then, in the Late Period, the sources turn. He becomes associated with foreign occupation and disorder, his images are attacked, and his name is cut out of inscriptions. The same figure, worshipped and then erased, by the same religion.
