Simurgh · Chapter 1 of 6
The Nest on Alborz
An exposed infant · A nest on the cliff · A predator who stopped
She came down for meat. She went back up with a son.
Ferdowsi's Shahnameh, the eleventh-century Persian epic, brings the bird into the story at an abandonment. Sam's son is born with white hair, his father reads it as a mark of the evil spirit rather than as a child who looks unusual, and the infant is carried up Mount Alborz and left. The Simurgh finds him there. The poem is blunt about her first intention — she takes him to the nest as food for her young — and then it simply says she does not. She raises him among them instead. The creature who enters as a predator is the only parent in the episode who does not give the boy up.
