Sleipnir · Chapter 3 of 5

The Road to Hel

Hermóðr · The Gjöll bridge · A gate cleared

There is one road nothing walks back from. He jumped the gate.

When Baldr dies, Norse tradition needs somebody to go and ask for him back, and the errand requires the horse. Hermóðr rides Sleipnir nine nights through valleys so dark that he sees nothing at all, over the bridge across the river Gjöll, and up to the gate of Hel's country. The gate is shut. He tightens the girths, sets the horse at it, and Snorri says Sleipnir jumped so hard that the gate came nowhere near him. That is what the eight legs are for, in the story that puts them most plainly to work.

Unlocks in-game at Ascension tier 1.
