Tengu · Chapter 1 of 6
The Heavenly Dog
637 · A borrowed omen · A name still loose
Before it was anything at all, it was a noise and a bad sign.
The tengu enters the Japanese record as an event, not a creature. The chronicle Nihon Shoki describes a great star crossing from east to west in 637 with a sound like thunder, and reports that the priest Min — who had studied in China — called it no shooting star but a heavenly dog, the tiāngǒu of Chinese omen lore, the kind of sign that comes before a rising. The chronicle writes the Chinese characters and then glosses them in Japanese as amatsukitsune, heavenly fox, which suggests nobody yet had a settled idea what had been named.
