The Thunderer

Strength · Protection · The common people

Thunder shapes the world, but it also clears the air.

In Norse tradition Thor was worshipped as a god of thunder, strength and protection, and what he left behind is unusually domestic. The sources describe him guarding the road between Asgard and Midgard; the archaeology fills in the rest, since farmers wore hammer amulets at their throats long after the last temple had fallen. Scholars generally read him as the figure ordinary households reached for, while Odin kept the company of kings, poets and the war-dead. Where Odin is said to have traded an eye for wisdom, Thor was asked for no such price. He simply stood in the doorway of the world and refused to move.
