Xolotl · Chapter 3 of 5
The Sun Would Not Move
A sun that stopped · A refusal · Two accounts, kept apart
Every hiding place he tried is still called after him.
The tradition's account of the present age has a sun that rises and then stops. In Sahagun's telling the assembled beings at Teotihuacan must give their own lives to set it moving, and Ehecatl the wind does the killing; the flight and the transformations belong to the Leyenda de los Soles, which tells the episode differently and names Xolotl as the one who runs. In that text he flees through maize and becomes a doubled stalk, through maguey and becomes a doubled plant, then into the water as the axolotl, and is taken there. Two accounts, not one.
