The Salamander That Kept the Name

A word that survived · A larva for life · A lab animal

He hid in the water and ended up in every textbook.

One Nahuatl word outlived the tradition that made it. The axolotl — water-xolotl — is a salamander of the lakes around Mexico City that keeps its larval body and its gills for life instead of leaving the water, which is the curiosity that made it famous in nineteenth-century Europe. The name travelled with the animal into Spanish, French and English. The creature that Nahua myth used as a last hiding place is now the standard laboratory animal for a body that never finishes.

Unlocks in-game at Ascension tier 4.
