Zal · Chapter 2 of 7
The Nest on Alborz
The Simurgh · A nest · A feather given
He was food for about a minute, and family for twenty years.
In the Shahnameh the Simurgh finds the child on the mountain and carries him up to her nest, and the poem is blunt that she means him as food for her young. Then she does not do it. She raises him instead, among her own, and he grows up on a cliff with a bird for a mother. When Sam repents and comes looking, she gives Zal back — and gives him a feather, telling him to burn it if he is ever in need and reminding him that he had a nurse whose heart is his. It is a leaving, and the poem treats it as one.
- Raised on a cliff
- A nurse, not a mother
- One feather, kept
