Born from a Washing — illustration for the Amaterasu chapter of the Ages of Myth Codex

Amaterasu · Chapter 1 of 6

Born from a Washing

Izanagi · Purification · Three children

She begins as something washed clean, not as something built.

The Kojiki describes Izanagi returning from the land of the dead and bathing to purify himself, and it is during that washing that Amaterasu comes into being — from his left eye, with Tsukuyomi from his right and Susanoo from his nose. She is given the plain of heaven to rule. The detail worth keeping is the order of events: in this account the sun does not precede the world but arrives partway through it, out of an act of cleansing. The Nihon Shoki describes it more than one way.
