Amaterasu · Chapter 6 of 6

The Mirror and the Line

Regalia · Descent · A tradition with a history

Three objects, and an argument that outlasted every one of them.

Japanese tradition continues the story past the cave. Amaterasu is described sending her grandson Ninigi down to the reed plains with three objects — the mirror from the tree, a jewel, and the sword Susanoo had sent her — and instructing that the mirror be treated as herself. The chronicles trace the imperial line from that descent, which is a claim about legitimacy as much as about myth, and it was used as one for a very long time. The mirror is said to be kept at Ise, where it is not shown.

Unlocks in-game at Ascension tier 4.
