The Hidden One

Pyramid Texts · A Theban local god · A name that became doctrine

He was drawn on every temple wall. The hymns still insisted that was not what he looked like.

Amun appears early, in the Pyramid Texts, as a minor figure whose name means something like hidden or concealed. By the Middle Kingdom he is established at Thebes, still one local god among several. Then Thebes becomes politically dominant, and Amun rises with it — and the name becomes theology. Because he is hidden, he can be identified with anything: the Egyptians merged him with the sun god as Amun-Ra without either being diminished, because the hidden one is by definition the aspect you cannot see. The Leiden hymns put it directly. His true form is unknown even to the other gods, and that unknowability is not a limit on his power. It is the power.
