Karnak — illustration for the amun chapter of the Ages of Myth Codex

amun · Chapter 2 of 4

Karnak

Two thousand years · 134 columns · A priesthood with land

They could not show his true form, so they built outward instead.

Karnak is not a temple so much as a habit of worship. Successive pharaohs for roughly two thousand years added pylons, halls, obelisks and courts to Amun's precinct at Thebes, each building in front of or around the last, until the complex covered an area that could hold several cathedrals. The Great Hypostyle Hall alone has one hundred and thirty-four columns. The priesthood that ran it accumulated land, grain and influence to match, to the point where the high priest of Amun was a political force the crown had to manage. A god defined by being hidden ended up with the largest temple complex in the country.
