The Oracle At Siwa

A desert oasis · A private audience · An answer kept private

The most consequential thing he ever heard, and he never repeated it.

Amun's oracle sat at Siwa, an oasis days out into the Libyan desert. In 331 BC Alexander detoured there, and the sources agree on the difficulty of the journey and on almost nothing else. Rain fell in a place with no rain; the party lost the track and was guided back, by ravens or by snakes depending on who is telling it. The priest greeted him, and Alexander went in alone. Afterwards he said only that he had heard what he wished to hear. What he asked and what he was told are not reliably recorded — later writers supply versions that disagree — but he began, from that point, to be called the son of Ammon.

Unlocks in-game at Mastery 3.
