Daedalus · Chapter 2 of 6
The Cow of Wood
A bull withheld · A hollow frame · What was born
The account records the work. It does not record an objection.
The tradition is blunt about what he built and why. Minos kept back a bull he had promised to sacrifice; his wife Pasiphae was made to desire it; and Daedalus built her a hollow wooden cow on wheels, covered in hide, so that she could be inside it. What was born afterwards had a bull's head on a man's body, and Crete called it the Minotaur. Apollodorus reports the construction flatly, as a job of work. The surviving account tells us what he built and not what he thought of building it.
