Daedalus · Chapter 3 of 6
The House That Could Not Be Left
A maze commissioned · A thread given away · A maker shut in
He knew the way out. That was exactly the charge against him.
Minos needed the thing hidden, and the sources say Daedalus built the Labyrinth to hide it: a house of winding passages that confused the way out. When Theseus came, it was Daedalus who told Ariadne about the thread, and that detail ends his employment. Apollodorus has Minos shut him into the Labyrinth himself, with his son Icarus, for the help he gave. Greek tradition rarely lets a maker stand outside his own work, and it does not here — the man who designed the inescapable building is put inside it.
