Seven Trials, and a Caravan — illustration for the Esfandiyar chapter of the Ages of Myth Codex

Esfandiyar · Chapter 4 of 8

Seven Trials, and a Caravan

A doubled structure · A bladed chest · A fortress taken by trade

He did not break the gate. He was invited through it, with the boxes.

The road to the fortress where his sisters are held becomes his own set of seven trials in the Shahnameh, and the poem's audience knew perfectly well that Rostam had a famous seven of his own. Wolves, lions, a sorceress, a blizzard, a crossing — and a dragon he kills by building a wheeled cart with a bladed chest on it and riding inside, so that the creature swallows the whole contraption and is opened from within. Then he takes the fortress without a siege. He arrives as a merchant with camels of coin and eighty pairs of chests, and the chests are full of his own men.
