Esfandiyar · Chapter 5 of 8
Bring Him Back in Chains
A third hedge · An errand about chains · A mother overridden
His father knew what the errand would cost, and sent him on it.
He comes home victorious and asks for what he was promised twice, and the Shahnameh has Goshtasp hedge a third time — knowing, because a seer has told him, that his son will die at Rostam's hand. There is one more errand. Go to Sistan, and bring Rostam to court in chains. Esfandiyar argues against it: the man is old, he is the reason this dynasty has a kingdom, and the demand is not one he can honourably make. He is refused, and he goes, overriding his mother, who weeps and tells him not to. The poem says he went driven by pride and ambition and the wish for power, and it does not soften that.
