He spent his last breath telling everyone who was actually at fault.
The Shahnameh gives them two meetings before any fighting, and in both Rostam offers everything except the chains, and Esfandiyar accepts nothing less. Honour forbids one; the king's word and the faith bind the other. His brother pleads with him repeatedly and is ignored. They fight; Rostam is beaten badly and comes back the next day with a tamarisk shaft. The arrow takes Esfandiyar in the eye and the world goes dark for him in the same instant. He comes to, pulls it out himself, and then speaks for a long time — absolving Rostam entirely, naming his father as the cause, and asking Rostam to raise his son.
