The Hand — illustration for the Fenrir chapter of the Ages of Myth Codex

Fenrir · Chapter 2 of 5

The Hand

Courage · Trust · A price paid

Someone had to put a hand in his mouth, and mean it.

In the myth only Týr would feed him — Snorri says plainly that none of the Æsir was bold enough to bring the wolf food except him — and this is the detail the whole story turns on. The others kept their distance; one walked up each day carrying meat. What passed between them Snorri never says, and the silence does a great deal of work, because when the binding comes what the Æsir need is somebody the wolf will believe. Whether that is friendship or the longest confidence trick in the Eddas, the sources leave to you.
