He Drew the Mace Himself — illustration for the Fereydun chapter of the Ages of Myth Codex

Fereydun · Chapter 2 of 5

He Drew the Mace Himself

A lineage told · A blacksmith at the door · A design drawn on the ground

He did not describe the weapon he wanted. He drew it.

At sixteen, in the Shahnameh, he demands his lineage and his mother gives it to him — the father taken, the serpents that fed on Iran, the cow killed — and then tells him to wait, because Zahhak has a hundred thousand men. Then Kaveh arrives with his following and the apron on the spear, and the waiting is over. The Shahnameh does something quietly characteristic here. Fereydun does not commission a weapon and leave the design to somebody else. He sends for smiths, takes a pair of compasses, and traces the shape on the ground himself: the head of an ox. They make it, and he pays them in cloth and gold and silver.
