No Passport, No Boat — illustration for the Fereydun chapter of the Ages of Myth Codex

Fereydun · Chapter 3 of 5

No Passport, No Boat

A named river · A rule kept to · A crossing on horseback

The only man in the empire still doing his job properly was the ferryman.

The Shahnameh brings the army to a river and then stops to tell you which one — the Arvand, it says, or call it the Dijla if you do not know the old tongue — and places the crossing at Baghdad. The guard of the ferry will not give them boats. The rule is that nobody crosses without a written pass under Zahhak's own seal, and the man intends to keep to it. There is no argument and no bribe. Fereydun puts his horse into the water, and the whole army goes in behind him, over saddle-height, and comes out on the far side. It is the first thing he does as a claimant and it is entirely characteristic.

Unlocks in-game at Ascension tier 1.
