Gordafarid · Chapter 3 of 5
She Sees No Cure but a Stratagem
A helmet lifted · A lasso · An argument about his honour
She did not beg. She explained what this would look like.
She turns and runs, and the Shahnameh says so without softening it. Sohrab overtakes her, lifts the helmet off, and her hair comes down; he marvels that if Iran sends girls like this, what must its horsemen be. Then the lasso closes on her waist. The poem says she saw no cure but a stratagem — and the stratagem is not a plea. She argues his disgrace, not hers: two armies are watching, and his own men will say he raised dust against a girl. Better, she tells him, to settle it privately. The fortress, the treasure and its keeper are his. He rides beside her to the gate.
- A stratagem
- His honour, not hers
- A promise made
