Hela · Chapter 2 of 5
Eljudnir
A hall named · Furniture named · A household, not a torment
Everything in the house is called what it does to you.
Snorri goes further than any other source about her household, and the detail is a list of names. The hall is Eljudnir, sleet-battered. The dish is Hunger and the knife Famine; the servant is Ganglati and the maid Ganglot, both meaning something like slow-walker; the bed is Sick-bed and its hangings Gleaming-bale. Scholarship is split on whether this furniture is inherited tradition or Snorri allegorising in the manner of his schooling, because no other surviving text knows any of it. Either way, the underworld here is a household rather than a punishment.
