Hela · Chapter 3 of 5
Baldr's Ransom
A ride of nine nights · A condition · One dry-eyed refusal
One creature declined, and that was the whole of it.
The tradition's most famous demand is hers. When Baldr dies, Hermod rides nine nights down to her hall to ask for him back, and she does not refuse — she sets a condition. If everything in the world, living and dead, weeps for him, he may go. The messengers go out and the world weeps, until they find a giantess called Thokk sitting in a cave, who says she will weep dry tears and Hel may keep what she has. Snorri adds that people supposed this was Loki. The bargain holds.
