The Ship of the Dead

At the end the sources give her people a passage rather than a battle line. Voluspa and Snorri describe Naglfar, a ship built from the nails of the dead, breaking loose when the seas rise and carrying a host out of her country toward the last field; Snorri puts Loki at the steering oar. Hel herself is not narrated fighting, and no source has her command the host: what the texts associate with her is the country it sails from. The dead the sources send her are the ones no battlefield claims — the sick and the old — and nothing in the texts has her gather them.
