Horus · Chapter 2 of 8

Two Horuses

Two falcons · One name · A merge inside the texts

Two gods wore the same name until the name won.

The sources do not give one Horus, and Egyptology does not try to make them. One is Horus the Elder, a sky falcon worshipped in his own right and called a brother of Osiris and Set in some tellings. The other is Horus son of Isis, conceived after his father's death and born to take up a stolen claim. Later theology treats the two as aspects of a single god and temple texts move between them freely. Modern scholarship reads that as separate local traditions gathered under one name over a very long period. The entry that follows tells the son's story; the elder keeps surfacing inside it.
