Horus · Chapter 3 of 8

The Child at Chemmis

Marsh papyrus · A scorpion · Spells that reuse the scene

The heir survived childhood. In this story that is the achievement.

The tradition hides the child. With Osiris dead and Set holding the kingship, Isis is described raising her son in the papyrus marshes of Chemmis, out of sight in the Delta. The danger in these texts is not only Set: the boy is bitten, stung by a scorpion, burned with fever, and healed each time through his mother's magic and the intervention of other gods. Egyptian healing spells reuse the scene constantly, because a household treating a sick child could place that child inside the story. Horus the Child became a figure in his own right, and his amulets outnumber his myths.
