The Eye — illustration for the Horus chapter of the Ages of Myth Codex

Horus · Chapter 5 of 8

The Eye

An eye lost · Made sound · Offered to a father

Whole is not the same as unhurt. Egypt kept the difference.

Egyptian myth takes the eye away and then restores it, and the restoration is the point. In the struggle with Set the sources describe Horus losing an eye; it is recovered, made whole, and named wedjat, on a word for soundness. Thoth is credited with putting it right in many tellings. Horus then offers the eye to his dead father, and that gesture becomes the model for every offering made in every temple — the thing given back that makes the receiver whole again. The wedjat is among the most reproduced images Egypt left behind, and it started as an injury.

Unlocks in-game at Ascension tier 1.
