A god shaped like a warning, fixed above the door.
A temple at Edfu carries a myth the retellings rarely reach. In it Horus of Behdet flies as a winged sun-disk ahead of Ra's boat and puts down a rebellion along the length of the Nile, harpooning enemies who take the shape of hippopotami and crocodiles, town after town from south to north. The text reads like a campaign record with gods in it, carved where a Ptolemaic priesthood wanted it read. The winged disk above countless Egyptian doorways is this Horus, and it was already an old protective sign when Edfu finally wrote the story out.
