The Pillar and the Wrong Word — illustration for the Izanagi chapter of the Ages of Myth Codex

Izanagi · Chapter 2 of 6

The Pillar and the Wrong Word

A pillar · A word out of turn · A boat of reeds

The world was built twice, because of the order two people spoke in.

The chronicles record a procedure and then a mistake, and the sources name that mistake themselves. The pair raise a pillar on the island, walk around it from opposite sides to meet, and marry. Izanami speaks first in admiration, and the Kojiki has Izanagi say plainly that it is not good for the woman to have spoken first. The child born is Hiruko, whom the account says could not stand, and he is set adrift in a boat of reeds. The heavenly deities, consulted afterwards, give the same reason. The circuit is repeated with the man speaking first, and the islands of Japan follow.
