Izanagi · Chapter 3 of 6
The Fire That Killed Her
A birth of fire · A death · A blade that made more gods
Creation did not pause for grief. It counted what grief produced.
The birth-list in the chronicles runs steadily until it stops. After the islands come the deities of wind and trees and mountains and rivers, and then Izanami bears the fire, Kagutsuchi, and the sources say the birth burns her. What she produces while dying is recorded as further deities, so the account keeps generating world out of the loss itself. Izanagi beheads the fire-child, and from the blood on the blade and from the pieces of the body still more gods come. Then he goes after her into the dark, which the tradition presents as a decision without arguing about it.
