Eighteen Sons — illustration for the Kaveh chapter of the Ages of Myth Codex

Kaveh · Chapter 1 of 5

Eighteen Sons

No city, no title · Seventeen taken · A king reminded of his job

He did not deny that the man was king. He said so, and then billed him for it.

The Shahnameh gives him no city, no ancestry and no title. A voice is heard crying for justice outside the palace, and a blacksmith is brought in and set among the paladins, and what he says is arithmetic. I had eighteen sons in this world, and one is left. He names his trade — a smith, an inoffensive man, on whose head the king is pouring fire — and then he says the thing that makes the scene work: that Zahhak may be of dragon form, but he is still the king, and a king owes justice. Zahhak, astonished, has the last son released and tries to buy the father with kind words.
