Loki · Chapter 1 of 6
The Trickster
Cunning · Ambiguity · A late villain
He was not the enemy until someone needed one.
Loki is not a Norse devil; that reading arrived later, through Christian eyes. The sources give him as a giant's son living among the Æsir, and for most of the myths he is the reason anything gets done at all — the walls of Asgard, the hammer, the ship, the spear. The pattern repeats: he causes a crisis, then solves it, and the solution usually costs him more dignity than the crisis cost anyone else. He is neither loyal nor quite an enemy, and the stories are far more interested in that than in judging him.
