Loki · Chapter 2 of 6
The Wager
A bet · A technicality · Consequences
He promised his head. He never promised his neck.
He cut the golden hair from Thor's wife as a joke and had to replace it, so — the Edda relates — he went to the dwarves, and to drive them harder bet his own head that they could not out-craft their rivals. They could. Loki lost, then argued that he had wagered his head and not his neck, so no part of it could lawfully be cut. The dwarves settled for sewing his mouth shut. The treasures he lost that bet with are, in the myths, the finest weapons the Æsir ever carried.
