The Well Under the Root

A root · A well · Water with a price

Knowledge kept somewhere you have to travel to.

Norse tradition puts wisdom in a specific place: a well beneath one of the roots of the world-tree, where knowledge is in the water and a being called Mimir owns it. Snorri says Mimir drinks from the well daily with the Gjallarhorn and is full of learning because of it. Voluspa knows the well by name. The arrangement is oddly commercial for a mythology — the water is not free, and the price is very nearly the whole reason anybody still remembers who Mimir was.
