The Eye in the Water — illustration for the Mimir chapter of the Ages of Myth Codex

Mimir · Chapter 2 of 4

The Eye in the Water

A pledge left · No scene · A bare statement

The most expensive drink in the north, described in one line.

The famous transaction sits in the poems rather than in Snorri's expansion of them. Voluspa says that Odin's pledge lies hidden in Mimir's well, and Snorri reads the pledge as the eye: Odin asked for a drink and left it behind. What the sources do not do is dramatise it. There is no scene, no bargaining and no gloating — the exchange survives as a bare statement about where something of Odin's is now kept, and no surviving text elaborates it.
