Mimir · Chapter 4 of 4
How Many Mimirs?
Variant names · A wood · A unified figure, late
One name, several owners, and no clerk to sort them out.
The sources cannot agree on how many of him there are. Old Norse carries Mimir, Mim and Mimi, the giant Sokkmimir, the tree-name Mimameid, and Hoddmimir's wood, where two humans shelter through the last winter and come out again. Some of these names are commonly treated as variants or cognate formations, and the relationship among them remains disputed — they may be one figure, several, or an element that attached itself to whatever stood near the world-tree. Snorri presents a comparatively unified figure, and that is the version the modern retellings inherited.
